Spray Coating or Full Render, which is right for you?
A spray wall coating refreshes and protects an exterior surface without replacing it. It is the right choice when your existing render or masonry is structurally sound and free of significant cracking — but has become tired, stained or discoloured. It's faster, less disruptive and more affordable than a full re-render.
If your render is cracking, bulging, damp-affected or falling away from the wall, a full render system will be needed. Our team will advise honestly at the free quote stage which option is appropriate for your property. We'll never recommend a more expensive solution than you need.
Our Process
Cleaning & Preparation: Walls are cleaned, repaired and prepared to ensure solid adhesion.
Masking & Protection: Windows, doors, paths and fixtures are covered to protect surrounding areas.
Priming: A suitable primer is applied where needed for better adhesion and colour uniformity.
Spray Application: The coating is applied in thin, controlled layers for a smooth, uniform finish.
Detailing: We remove masking, tidy edges and leave the property clean and ready to enjoy.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
An exterior spray wall coating is a thick, breathable, polymer-based coating applied to external masonry surfaces using professional spray equipment. Unlike masonry paint, which is a relatively thin decorative layer, spray wall coatings are formulated to fill minor surface imperfections, provide a consistent finish, and deliver lasting protection against water ingress, frost, and UV exposure. They're applied to existing render, pebbledash, brick, or masonry without the need to strip the existing surface.
-
A spray coating is applied over the existing exterior surface without removing it — it refreshes and protects what's already there. Full rendering involves removing the existing finish, preparing the substrate, and applying a new render system from scratch. Spray coating is faster, less disruptive, and costs less than a full re-render. It's suitable when the existing surface is structurally sound and you want to improve its appearance and weatherproofing without full replacement. If the existing render is cracked, hollow, or failing, spray coating is not appropriate — a re-render is the right solution.
-
A professionally applied exterior spray coating from a quality manufacturer will typically last 10–15 years before it may benefit from recoating. Lifespan varies depending on the product, the condition of the substrate it was applied to, and the exposure of the property. It's worth noting that spray coatings are a surface treatment — they don't improve the structural condition of failing render underneath, which is why proper surface assessment before application is important.
-
Spray coatings can be applied to most sound, stable exterior surfaces — including pebbledash, sand and cement render, tyrolean finishes, rough cast, brick, and block. The surface must be clean, dry, free from organic growth, and structurally sound. Areas of hollow or blown render need to be addressed before coating. We carry out a surface assessment as part of the quotation process.
-
A spray wall coating will fill and bridge hairline cracks and minor surface imperfections, giving a cleaner overall appearance. It will not permanently repair wider structural cracks or address the underlying cause of cracking. If your render has significant cracking or movement-related damage, we'd recommend a render repair or re-render rather than coating over the problem — we'll advise honestly during the survey.
